The Cedar County Historical Society held its monthly meeting on Sept. 25 in the museum in Stockton. Those in attendance were President Judy Nichols, Vice President Judith Cain, Secretary Connie Maupin, Treasurer Shirley Potts, Marci Haralson, Louella Phipps, Sharyl Henry, Kenneth Potts, Chris Barber, Anna Laura Hopkins and Bob Phillips.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance. The August secretary’s report and treasurer’s report were approved by the membership.

Bob Phillips gave his five minute lecture on the founding of the Lindley Prairie Cemetery and Church.

Judy Nichols reported that Glenda Pate will have the newsletter ready the last part of October.

The hot water tank valve in the office above museum was discussed again. Judy Nichols had consulted three different plumbers who were all of the opinion that the valve was not a threat.

Judy Nichols said that the ink cartridges have not been mailed for refund yet due to the fact we are still receiving donations.

The Society’s new business cards are in and look very nice. Thank you, Judy Nichols, for your work on making this happen,

A committee consisting of Judi Cain, Chris Barber and Connie Maupin was appointed to look into purchase of some items such as caps or bags that we might be able to sell for a profit for the Society.

The reprint of Historical Sketches of Cedar County is now in stock and ready for sale at $25 each.

Judy Nichols expressed the Society’s thanks to Chris Barber for keeping everyone on Facebook informed of our meeting dates and dates the museum is open and programs.

Lighting for the tent and some replacement lights for the museum have been acquired and installed by Judy Nichols.

The work schedule for the Walnut Festival was discussed. All time slots have been filled. This was due in part to a few people donating large blocks of their time to fill in for lack of volunteers. Ken and Shirley Potts will drive their golf cart in the Walnut Festival Parade to represent the Historical Society.

The membership voted to donate a copy of Historical Tours of Cedar County to the Sertoma Club for their raffle at the Walnut Festival. They voted to reduce the price of the printable, 1897 Plat Map CD and the 1967 Plat Map CD with and without the Stockton Lake overlay from $15 to $8. The 1961 plat map was the last map printed before the dam was built. Bob Estes, member and professional mapper, overlaid a copy of the lake over the plat map. It enables you to see where the old roads and land owners were located before the dam and lake were built. The 11×17 inch, frameable copy with the overlay will still be available for $5.

Luella Phipps donated a variety of army hats and pins that belonged to her brother, Merle Phipps. Ken Potts donated a variety of Army uniforms that once belonged to Paul Raines.

The museum will be open during its final full month of the year on Oct. 4, 18 and 30, from 1 until 4 p.m. It will also be open on Nov. 27 during our meeting, from 1 until 4 p.m. There will be no meeting in December. Admission to the museum is free, however, the Historical Society and museum operate on donations from the public.

The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 30 in the museum at 106 West Davis St. in Stockton. Our meetings are open to the public.
