ADHD

Q: Why are there so many kids in my son’s class being treated for being hyperactive?
Rick Casey, DO

A: It does seem like we have our share. Children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) often have problems paying attention and focusing on tasks. They sometimes act without thinking. Some children also fidget, cannot sit still, and have lots of energy. This common disorder can continue into adulthood, but most seem to get better by middle teenage years. The exact cause is not clear, although it seems to run in families. There is no evidence that it is caused by sugar, food additives, allergies or immunizations, however, there is a lot of talk about it. Medicine, counseling and extra support seem to be the mainstays of treatment. They need to be followed up on regularly, because treatment seems to change frequently for most patients. It is important to reward your child for positive behavior, as it is easy to get pretty negative with these hyperactive kids, sometimes. Regular sleep, giving them attention, time-outs, regular schedules, clear directions for expected behavior, avoiding stressful situations, and encouraging activities they enjoy (sports, music) all seem to help.
