Since it is vacation season how do we handle summer picnics, family celebrations and restaurants while on the road and still lose weight?

For summer picnics and get togethers:

Don’t go to an event hungry

Bring a vegetable or fruit tray

Take along a large container of water with lemon slices,

Other tips from members, do not stand by the food table and mindlessly graze while you visit.

At weddings, birthday parties: take only a small amount of cake and avoid the frosting. Don’t be tempted to eat all that is offered.

On the road, take healthy snacks with you. Several members had good tips, like order from the kid’s menu. Remember, you do not have to clean your plate, stop when you are full.

Robbie read an article on “Chose to live and enjoy.”

Marble game:  Jean won the right to draw but did not get the winning one

Jean had the program today. She took her program from TOPS “Learn it, Live it” titled “Enjoy a Stress-Free summer.”

Jean then said she did some research on sugar vs artificial sweeteners. Generally, if you can you should use real sugar in moderation. If you wish to use artificial sugars Stevia seems to be the best. Artificial sugars confuse your body as it gets the sweet signal but no sugar is there

Artificial sweeteners are so much sweeter than sugar so overstimulation of the sugar receptors from frequent use of these hyper-intense sweeteners may limit tolerance for more complex tastes and you may find you start to find less intensely sweet foods such as fruit less appealing and unsweet foods such as vegetables unpalatable.

Recent studies of artificial sweeteners find it may disrupt certain “gut microbes” which have been linked to obesity and glucose intolerance in otherwise healthy people.

Sugar-containing foods in their natural form, whole fruit, for example, tend to be highly nutritious—nutrient-dense, high in fiber and low in glycemic load. On the other hand, refined, concentrated sugar consumed in large amounts rapidly increases blood glucose and insulin levels, increases triglycerides, inflammatory mediators and oxygen radicals, and with them, the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic illnesses.

Maybe we should have a glass of water and an apple.

With no other business meeting was adjourned with our motto “IF IT IS TO BE IT IS UP TO ME”.
