The 2017 legislative session is in full swing. It is an honor to preside over the Missouri Senate, and to give all members an opportunity to be heard and debate on issues facing our state. The days (and often nights) are long, but the work is needed. We still have a long way to go, so I encourage you to stay involved and contact us if you have questions or concerns.

I was privileged this week to welcome members of Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) to watch democracy in action. Sixty high school students were chosen to observe Missouri’s elected officials, and I was glad to host Sydney from Holt County to job shadow in the lieutenant governor’s office. She is a bright young lady, and I look forward to seeing her become a leader in her community.

This week I had the honor of addressing the Missouri Association of Veterans Organizations. Seeing veterans from across Missouri rallying in the capitol rotunda brought back memories of my service in the U.S. Army. I would not be the person I am today without my time in the U.S. Army. We sometimes take our basic rights for granted, but we must always remember the thousands of men and women who paid the ultimate price to keep us safe.

Governor Greitens and I are in agreement, one of our top priorities will be to ensure all programs, commissions and boards geared towards veterans are providing the needed care and advocacy. If a program works, I will be the first to champion its success, but if it’s not, I will work to either reform or dissolve it. I am committed to making Missouri the best state in the country for veterans. I want them to call Missouri home, just as I have my entire life.
