Brown, Carl 1cc

Carl A. Brown Sr., 77, El Dorado Springs, left this earth while sleeping peacefully, at his home on Monday, Dec. 26, 2016. Having previously lived in El Dorado Springs with his wife, Carroll A. (Hutchinson) Brown, he’d returned permanently from Kansas City, KS, in the late 1990’s after Carroll’s death in 1995, at age 55.

He was well known and liked by many in El Dorado Springs and in the surrounding area. He loved living here and enjoyed the Picnic in the summer. Among his many hobbies were hunting, fishing, “frogging” and other outdoor activities which he found were abundant here, and welcomed any friends and family to join in his adventures.

Carl, born Oct. 22, 1939, was the youngest and last surviving child from the union of Charles Willard and Irene Lee (Beeler) Brown. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, two sisters (Mary Sweeney, Anna Lee Beacham), three brothers (Charles “Bub,” Clarence and Clinton), and many nieces and nephews.

His family had lived in the Armourdale area of Kansas City, where, as a youth, he and his siblings attended Catholic schools. He took pride in graduating from 8th grade in the Catholic school system, “having learned more there, by 8th grade, than someone graduating from a public school in the 12th grade.” Upon graduating from school, he immediately started working as a cook at Paul Bunyan’s, during which time he met his wife. They married June 20, 1958.

Carl had worked several jobs, including Sunshine Biscuits as well as the GATX Railyard, where he enjoyed working alongside his brother, Clinton, until GATX closed in 1984.

During the past two decades, he’d become an “UN-ordained minister” and would adamantly “preach The Word of God” to fall upon any “available souls” who would stop to listen. His local nickname was “The Candy Man,” having become known for his homemade assorted variety of peanut brittle he made and proudly distributed for Christmas.

He is survived by three children – Carla A. Price (Larry), Carl A. Brown (Gwen) and Colette Snodgrass (Kevin). His youngest daughter, Candy Shrout, preceded him in death in 2006 at age 39. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law (Clara E. Brown), brother-in-law (Lester M. Hutchinson II), and multiple nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, in Oak Grove Christian Church at 5703 Oak Grove Road, Kansas City, KS. Local arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
