Freedia Irene Chambers Floyd, 99, passed away June 10, 2018, in Community Springs Healthcare in El Dorado Springs. Freedia was the seventh child born to John and Lottie Chambers on May 26, 1919.

As a high school graduate, no small feat in that era, Freedia would use her intellect in many ways throughout her future endeavors. Hard work was no stranger to her. She learned early on to care for stock and tend to milk cows.

At an early age, Freedia and Red Fields welcomed a son, Lecil Merle Fields to their marriage. Freedia would later marry again, this union to Sherman Floyd, gaining two more sons, Dean and Larry. They would reside along Cedar Creek in Cedar County farming and collecting memories until moving to the courthouse.

When Sherman took the Sheriff’s office, Freedia was at his side. She became the Head Jailer Dispatcher for the Cedar County Sheriff’s Department, Stockton City Police and Missouri State Highway Patrol in the area. She was chief cook and dishwasher for those who chose to spend time in the county jail. No one ever complained about a meal.

After the courthouse, Freedia and Sherman moved back to the farm when she chose to begin full time employment with Key Industries at the age of 60, working to the age of 65 before retiring to the home. Retirement was not normal for Freedia, she had always and would always prefer to keep busy, whether it was knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, canning or baking.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles and kept journals of their days and the events that took place. If you asked Grandma when it last rained, she could tell you and even add a history lesson with it. Her door was always open, taking care of family and siblings in their later years. She enjoyed company, family and most of all, her grandkids. Cold iced tea or a hot cup of coffee was always available at Freedia’s home.

She kept contact with her extended family with letters on a fairly regular basis. She always knew what was going on with nieces, nephews, grand kids or great-grandkids. From Louisiana to Colorado, Oklahoma, Stockton, El Dorado Springs, or a great grandson in the Marine Corps, Freedia kept up with the times.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters; husband, Sherman; son, Dean, and grandson, Larry Dean. 99 years gives way to lots of memories.

She is survived by Lecil Merle and Bobbie of Horton, Janice Floyd of Stockton and Larry and Betty Floyd of El Dorado Springs.  Also surviving are grand children – Randy Floyd, Sherrie Horne, Lisa Hendrix, Becky Melton, Dale Fields and Karen Martin; 21 great-grand children and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
