Verone Duaine Nelson, 93, of El Dorado Springs, died on June 21, 2019, at Community Springs Nursing Home, El Dorado Springs. He was born April 4, 1926 near Joice, IA, the son of Nels H. and Alyce (Halvorson) Nelson.

He was baptized and confirmed at the Bristol Lutheran Church, near Joice, IA, and received his education in Worth County.

On Aug. 13, 1952, he was married to Bonnie N. Zastrow at the Anchorage Lutheran Church in Anchorage, AK.

From 1944 to 1965 he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. During his naval career he served on Attack Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, Attack Cargo Ship, Naval Ammunition Depot, Naval Recruiting Station, Overseas Shore Stations and Naval Air Station.

Verone was awarded the Good Conduct Medal with four stars, China Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal (World War II), and the National Defense Service Medal and was also entitled to the Vietnam and Korean War Medals.

In 1965 he “retired” to rural southwest Missouri where he and Bonnie farmed, raising beef cattle. At that time he was also employed with Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Vernon County. They moved to El Dorado Springs in 1987. He was an avid sports fan, golfer, and fisherman.

Verone was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis E. Nelson, and parents, Nels H. Nelson and Alyce C. Nelson.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; two nieces, Deborah Scholten and family; Doreen Carter and family and many relatives.

Services were Friday, July 26, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, El Dorado Springs, with Rev. Brent Bland officiating.

Military services were by the United States Navy Honor Guard VFW Post #257.

Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery under direction of Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs. www.sheldongoodrich.com.
