Walter Danney “Dan” Oberly was born Feb. 18, 1931, at the family home in Rockville, the son of Walter J. and Oma (Shouse) Oberly. Dan departed this life Feb. 22, 2018, a few days after his 87th birthday.

Dan attended Osage Country School not far from his home through the 8th grade at which time he stayed home to help on the farm. He served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Following his time of service he was united in marriage to Peggy Joann Bowen Feb. 20, 1959, at Filley (MO) West Church. Dan and Peggy made their home on their farm near Taberville.

He raised cattle and grew beans, wheat and corn through the years. Dan enjoyed buying and selling guns for several years. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and in his later years enjoyed following the accomplishments of his great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding Dan in death were his wife of 58 years, Peggy; his daughter, Rhonda Gay Oberly; and his brother John Oberly. Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth Joann “Jody” Davis, of Belton; a sister-in-law. Clara Belle Oberly of Appleton City; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A service was conducted in Hill and Son Funeral Home, Appleton City, on Monday, Feb. 26, with Pastor Nick VanDam officiating.

A military graveside service was conducted by the El Dorado Springs VFW Post #257 Missouri Honor Guard – Navy.
