Winifred Lenore (Wright) Roll, 88, was born May 31, 1928, in Santa Fe, NM, to Carl J. and Eunice P. (Leigh) Wright. She passed away July 6, 2016, at her home.
On June 27, 1964, she was united in marriage to William (Bill) J. Roll. Bill and Winifred just celebrated 52 years of marriage. Born to the marriage was Eunice D. (Roll) Tichenor, of Lamar.
Winifred graduated from Santa Fe, New Mexico High School in 1942, and afterwards studied bookkeeping, a skill that became instrumental while working alongside her husband for their entire marriage in 42 different states, finally settling in Missouri in 1971. On their journey, they raised rabbits, sheep, cattle and hogs, repaired water towers, sold cookware, owned gas stations, managed rental property and ended up in rural El Dorado Springs, running a successful sawmill, Superior Lumber, for the last 38 years.
Winifred’s interests included sewing, cooking and canning, gardening, drawing and painting. She was always eager to hop aboard one of Bill’s trucks while running the home and managing the bookkeeping side of the business. She was a talented cook, who for a few years shared her skills with the public at Roll’s Diner in Pomme de Terre. She could make the best homemade tortillas and beans with chili. She wasn’t afraid to clean fish or butcher a chicken or rabbit to get dinner on the table. Whatever it took to get the job done, she shared Bill’s commitment to work as her calling.
She is survived by her husband, Bill, of the home; their daughter, Eunice D. (Roll) Tichenor, of Lamar; children – Winifred Geraldine Bradley of Colorado, Charlene Bradley of Hawaii, John C. Bradley Jr. of Texas, Wilmer Roll, Mitchell Roll and Kathy (Roll) Marthe of Texas and Lillian Roll Davis of Nevada, MO. Children preceding Winifred in death were – Eunice Emma Dean Bradley, Vaughn R. Bradley, and Carl D. Bradley. They have 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sisters – Carol, Charlotte and Dorothy; brothers, Carl Jr. and Alfred; and many nieces, nephews and countless friends.
Winifred was a devoted wife and mother and was always willing to help anyone in need. All who knew her were inspired by her ambitious, “get things done” attitude and will miss her dearly.
A service was held Saturday, July 9, in Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs, with Father Charles Dunn officiating.
Music was “Count Your Blessings,” “Sweet By And By” and “In The Garden”
Interment was in Moore Catholic Cemetery southest of El Dorado Springs under direction of Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs, www.sheldonfh.com.
