Donald Leon Capps, 85, El Dorado Springs, died on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at his home. He was born Jan. 7, 1929, to Benjamin Harrison Capps and Jesse Adamson Capps in Vernon County.

Don was the fifth of six brothers born to the Capps family. His father, Ben, was a sharecropper, horse-trader, farmer, logger and pub owner. His mother was a homemaker.

The family survived the depression by hunting, fishing, farming – doing whatever it took to put food on the table. The older Capps boys had developed quite a reputation of being some of the strongest, toughest, hardest working young men in southwestern Missouri, spending many a long day (and night) performing backbreaking work

    James Wendell “Jack” Martin, Collins, 91, died May 17, 2014. He was born on Feb. 14, 1923, in Independence, to James Hudson Martin and Myrtle May Barnett Martin, the youngest of nine children spanning 24 years. He was raised on the Martin homestead south of Collins.

    Jack attended Collins school, excelling at basketball and graduating second in the class of 1941.

    Bertie Marie Lutes, 92, was born April 28, 1922, east of Roscoe to George David and Mary Maud Mitchell and passed away June 15, 2014, at Big Spring Care Center in Humansville.

    She had one sister, Nell Smith, and five brothers – Jess, James, George, twin brothers, Lee and Charles.

    Shauna Lea Beason was born July 17, 1955, the first of twin daughters born to Leonard “Junior” Beason and Joyce Whitesell.

    Valeria Deloris Curry

    Valeria Deloris Curry, 67, Nevada, passed away Friday, June 13, 2104, in Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. She was born Dec. 12, 1946, to Leroy and Alice (Stires) Brown, in El Dorado Springs.

    Valeria was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Nevada.

    She worked for many years as a nurse’s aide at the hospital. She enjoyed fishing and camping and was a great gardener.
