On the opening weekend of the 2012 Missouri firearms deer season, hunters reported killing 69,614 deer, down over 20,000 from the 89,728 taken on the 2011 opening weekend. The record is the 133,136 hunters harvested in 2004.
The causes: too warm and windy on Saturday, too miserable on Sunday.
The top counties in the state were Howell – 1,464, Texas – 1,435 and Wayne – 1,430.
St. Clair led local counties with 999. Cedar County accounted for 558 deer. Vernon County was close behind with 543.
