The new El Dorado Springs wrestling team, under head coach Justin Stratton, headed to their first competition ever to compete in the Sherwood tournament.
When the dust had settled at the end of the day, El Dorado Springs took home 3rd place honors. Coach Stratton said his team was one match away from beating Sherwood which went on to win the tournament.
On the way to the win, El Dorado Springs wrestlers beat Lone Jack 60-18, Kimbrook 60-12 and South Holt 48-36. They lost to Sherwood 36-42.
That qualified them to wrestle for third place where they beat Tarkio 36-30.
Coach Stratton said, “The boys did great.” He mentioned that James Dubois, who wrestles in the 160 lb. class, agreed to wrestle in the 170 lb. class because Travis Leonard was injured earlier in the match. That kept an El Dorado Springs competitor in every class. The coach said that a 10 lb. disadvantage for a wrestler might was well have been 50 lbs.
The coach said that even when his wrestlers were losing, “They never quit.”
Members of the squad and their weight class are: Austin Burlingame (106), Logan Perrodin (113), Josey Smotherman (126), Jacob Boleyn (132), Tanner Hixon (145), Matthew Thurman (152), James Dubois (160), Travis Leonard (170), Ryan Parshall (182), Gage Miller (195), Koty Steward (285), Colby Charles (145), Haden Harper (160).
