Helen Edith (Sorden) Farmer, 95, El Dorado Springs, passed away on March 18, 2013, in Community Springs Healthcare Facility due to complications from pneumonia about a month before. She was born March 30, 1917, in Olney Springs, CO, the fourth of six children born to Olivar and Edith Sorden. All of her siblings are deceased: four brothers – Clarence, Melvin, Raymond and Elwood and one sister, Alice.
Helen was only four years old when her family moved in a covered wagon from Colorado to rural Lockwood to homestead the farm where she was raised. She attended the country schoolhouse in Sylvania, walking to school with her brothers.
At age 20, she married John Howard Farmer of Greenfield on Sept. 3, 1937. To this union three children were born and raised. She was a homemaker and had huge gardens, canning and freezing food for the winter. She also made the kids clothes for school.
Her faith was strong and she taught her children well. She was saved at a revival and attended church regularly from that day until her health failed and she was unable to go about six months ago.
Helen worked at Dunbrooke factory for seven years and then babysat and did custom sewing out of her home. She loved her family and church family and enjoyed going out to eat.
Preceding her in death was her husband, John Howard Farmer.
Survivors include her three children – Keith Farmer and wife, Marsha – Ft. Scott, KS, Joyce Zinchuck – El Dorado Springs and Linda Bennett – El Dorado Springs; six grandchildren – Kristal Farmer, Candice Bland and husband – Kyle, Derek Zinchuck, Christina Hardy and husband – Jim, Shawn McCullick and Julie Scott and husband – Kevin; six great-grandchildren – Camille Bland, Abigail Hardy, Nathan Hardy, Garin McCullick, Kellan Scott and Kaden Scott; and many other relatives and friends.
We all are going to miss her dearly.
