The Cedar and Vernon County Genealogical Society met March 19, in the meeting room of the Nevada Public Library, with Valo Jones presiding.
The guest speaker was Barnett Ellis, formerly from Walker, and currently living in Raymore. Mr. Ellis is a genealogist for the Kansas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). He has researched and had over 300 members accepted into the SAR nationwide.
Mr. Ellis spoke of the many web sites available for genealogical research. While some of the sites, like www.ancestry.com and www.fold3.com are good research sites, they can also be costly. Mr. Ellis told the group of several free sites that are available. He also recommended anyone interested in doing serious research to make a trip to the Mid-Continent Library in Independence and the National Archives in Kansas City.
The April meeting will be in El Dorado Springs at the Church of Christ at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend the meetings.
