Monday night, March 25, VFW Post 257 (the oldest chartered post in the State of Missouri) and the Auxiliary hosted the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy winners from El Dorado Springs.

The announcements were preceded by a dinner prepared by the Auxiliary.

The Patriot’s Pen writing competition is for middle school students. This year’s topic was “What I would tell American’s Founding Fathers?” The Voice of Democracy competition, which involves submitting a recording of their essays, is for high school students. This year’s theme was “Is Our Constitution still relevant?”

There were 93 entries in the Patriot’s Pen competition and 32 entries in the Voice of Democracy.

After the awards were given, first place Patriot’s Pen winner Drew Steuck returned his $150 in winnings to the VFW for their building program.

The post also raffled off a occasional table that was won by Jewel Ellerman and a craved wooden eagle that was won by Donnie Allen.
