Community Reading of the Bible

Posted April 18, 2013 at 10:22 am

Please take notice that the start date has been changed to Monday, April 29 beginning at 7 p.m. instead of Sunday, April 28 at 7 p.m.

We would like to encourage everyone to join in reading the entire Bible through from Genesis 1:1-Revelation 22:21. This event will take place from 7 p.m. April 29 through 7 p.m. Thursday May 2, 2013. There will be 20-minute time slots for people to sign up to read from the Bible. Yes that means 24 hours a day and all night long. We would like to encourage individuals, couples, families, students, adults, groups, etc. to participate in the public reading of God’s Word.

The plan is to have the whole Bible read and at 7 p.m. we will end with a time of praise and worship songs and prayer. May 2 is the National Day of Prayer and what better way to celebrate this special day than to have publicly read God’s Word. It is stressed that this is not public sermons and homilies regarding the text being read…it is strictly reading God’s word. It will take 72 hours to read the entire Bible. You might want to bring a lawn chair and listen to God’s Word being read during various times of the reading. It will be read in the City of El Dorado Springs Park Pavilion/Gazebo. We will have a podium with a Bible and we would like for those reading to sign their name(s) in the Bible where they read. And yes, you do need to read at the designated place.

When the Israelites returned from the Babylonian captivity, we read in Nehemiah 8:8-9, that Nehemiah, who was the governor, had Ezra the priest and scribe to read God’s Word. Some say they had not read from God’s Word for over 150 years. And when they finally heard God’s Word being read…they wept.

It is God’s Word and for just these 72 hours can we forget about our religious preferences and our political preferences and simply come together to read God’s Word. This will be a historical event that each and every one of us will want to be part of during a time where we need to hear God’s Word.
