Mary Lynn (Lucas) Winey

Mary Lynn (Lucas) Winey, 84, a resident of Hingham’s Allerton House since 2008, passed away peacefully at the Harbor House Rehabilitation Center on March 20, 2013.

Born and raised in El Dorado Springs, Mrs. Winey earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas at Lawrence, and later went on to pursue music at New York City’s Juilliard School, where she studied under Mack Harrell. She was also a student of the Aspen Summer Institute and spent several summers studying (and then working) at Michigan’s Interlochen Music Camp. While in New York she was accepted as a charter member and soloist with the New York Choir under the direction of Margaret Hillis. In that role, she gave concerts at Town Hall and at Carnegie Recital Hall and sang under Toscanini.

Mrs. Winey was a devout Christian who worked with the World Council of Churches in a program to rebuild Germany after World War ll. She was also active with the National Council of Churches for several years, helping the poor and the needy in Ohio and Kentucky.

After moving to Wichita, KS, in the 1970s, Mrs. Winey established herself in the music community where she remained active for years, participating in local musical productions, teaching voice at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, and giving private lessons to countless aspiring pianists. In 2008, she moved to Massachusetts to be close to her only child, Christopher Moos, (Kim) and their children, Calliandra and Sydney, all of Scituate, MA. She also leaves a grandson, Christopher Michael, and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Winey was predeceased by her parents, Mary Mildred (Logan) and Charles Edward Lucas, of El Dorado Springs, two brothers, George L. Lucas and Charles A. Lucas, and one grandson, Andrew Moos. In addition to her child and grandchildren, she is survived by a sister, Jane Bucci Stewart, of Schenectady, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
