SKATE TOWN – Who doesn’t have fond memories of their youth, strapping on a pair of roller skates and blazing around that track? Yes, even the Chamber of Commerce Executive Director laced-em-up when he was a young lad. At that time the skating rink was downtown. Now the place to skate in El Dorado Springs is Skate Town at 3220 South Highway 32, at the city limits. About three years ago Chamber of Commerce members Dwayne and Barbara Wallen traded one set of wheels for another set. For years they sold autos and trailers at Countryside Motors west of town. Now they own Skate Town and will still sell you some wheels, just a bit smaller.

Barbara told us “We always wanted to own it, and the right time came about. We love working with the kids…watching them grow and learn to skate. I have so many memories growing up skating with my best friend. I hope the kids today can have that too.”

I asked Barbara about some of the things that are happening at Skate Town, “We are working on a new skater of the month program. Winners get two free skate passes, a Skate Town shirt, their picture in local media, and their name on the marquee board. We love doing our Family Christian Night. There are so many good youth leaders with great messages.” Kids can come out, have fun, and learn about the Bible too. We had a guy come and speak from Monett that had lost his hands in an accident, the kids really liked him. He will be coming back again soon to show them what Christ has done for him and what he can still do. It was very interesting and inspirational.“

Why they are members of the Chamber of Commerce, “The Chamber has helped us stay out and active in the community and grow our business.” When Barbara isn’t at Skate Town you’ll find her reading a Christian book or maybe watching a romantic movie or a classic sitcom. But I’d say that’s a rarity with her busy schedule at Skate Town.
