Helaine Victoria Shaffer

Helaine Victoria Shaffer, 71, rural El Dorado Springs, passed away May 19, 2013, at Community Springs Healthcare. She was born June 1, 1941, to Benjamin and Florence (Larson) Lystrom in Fergus Falls, MN.

While in Minnesota, Lainy attended District 72 country school, Battle Lake High School and then graduated from Garden Grove High School in California.

On Feb. 20, 1959, she married Wesley Jay Shaffer and to this union three children were born – Charlotte, Anita and Charles.

While living in California Lainy and Wes were the owners/operators of two businesses and Lainy worked as an Amway Direct Distributor and for a period of time was a dental assistant. After selling their business in California, they moved back to Minnesota and bought a farm near where Helaine grew up. While there, she and Wes operated a registered dairy, managed a multi-faceted business in Ashby, MN. Lainy sold real estate in Ashby, and they later went back to the farm starting a game preserve and raising 35,000 pheasants.

During this time, Lainy was working to gather information on the family genealogy. Before moving to their farm in rural Cedar County in 2011, Wes and Helaine owned and operated a cattle farm and raised Airedales and Wire Fox Terriers in SE Oklahoma for a few years. She remained very active on the farm until her health failed.

While in Minnesota, Lainy was active in the Grue Lutheran Church, serving at various times as a clerk, accountant and Sunday School teacher.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a grandson, Justin Woldahl.

Survivors include: her husband, Wes, of the home; three children – Charlotte Woldahl and husband, Gene – Ashby, MN; Anita Hoeper and husband, Kevin – Blue Grass, MN; and Charles Shaffer and wife, Michelle – Orange County, CA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Ashby, MN. Arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
