A 1969 graduate of El Dorado Springs High School and 1973 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in agriculture, he was a member of the agriculture fraternity, Alpha Gamma Sigma. Ed and Kathy moved to McPherson, Kan., in 1973. He worked for Mid-Kansas Cooperative until retiring in 2006 to move to Cornwall, Pa. In Pennsylvania, he went back to work and retired from USAGypsum in 2019. A lifetime advocate for agriculture, at the time of his death he and Kathy owned two farms in Cedar County – one originally owned by his great-grandfather and one originally owned by her grandfather.

Known by many titles over the years – coach, assistant cubmaster, employee, manager, chairman, etc., – his favorite titles were husband, Dad and most fun of all, Papa. He could create something beautiful out of any piece of wood, including bringing antique furniture back to life and turning bowls on his lathe, and remodeling houses in need of love into beautiful homes. He especially enjoyed passing along these skills to his son and then his grandsons. His favorite sports teams – aside from his grandsons’ teams, of course – were the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. One of his favorite memories was taking his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons to Kauffman Stadium in 2017, where they saw the Royals win three consecutive games, including back-to-back-to-back home runs. And of course, he thought this year’s Super Bowl had a “super” outcome.

In Kansas, he was a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren and the McPherson County Extension board. In Pennsylvania, he was a member of the Annville Church of the Brethren, volunteered with the Mount Gretna Art Show and Mount Gretna Theatre, and he seldom missed a ballgame or other event involving his family.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Feb. 22, at Hackleman Cemetery, El Dorado Springs, under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home. After the service, the family met with friends at “The Cabins at Stockton Lake.”

Memorials are suggested to the Annville Church of the Brethren, Annville, PA., McPherson Church of the Brethren, McPherson, KS, or Hackleman Cemetery in care of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs, in Ed’s memory

The family wishes to suggest you attend a child’s ballgame and cheer for good plays or demonstrations of good sportsmanship made by players of both teams.
