Pauline (Julian) Hlavacek, 97, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, in El Dorado Springs.
Pauline was born Dec. 18, 1924, in Cedar County, south of El Dorado Springs. Pauline was the oldest daughter of Harvey and Eunice Mae (Summer) Julian. She grew up in the Olympia, Virgil City and Montevallo areas. She graduated from the Walnut Grove School in 1939, and From El Dorado Springs High School in 1943. Pauline attended Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, graduating with an Associate Art Degree in Education. She graduated from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.
Her teaching career included three years at Virgil City, three years at Greenridge near Olympia, four years at Pleasant Ridge southeast of El Dorado Springs. After school consolidation, she taught 24 years in the El Dorado Springs R-2 School District. She was teaching Language Arts in Junior High School at the time of her retirement in May 1980, a total of 34 years. Pauline enjoyed her teaching career very much.
She served on various education committees: Secretary-treasurer of the El Dorado Springs Alumni Association; sponsor of Elementary Student Council; president of Alpha Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, as sorority for women education; secretary-treasurer of Kay-Singer Tri Council of Alpha Delta Kappa; president, vice president, secretary, treasurer of the Sac-Osage Retired School Employee Association. While teaching, she was chosen as the Distinguished Teacher of the year in the 6th District of Missouri Retired Teacher Association. She was honored in Jefferson City Sept. 14, 2011, at the Missouri Retired Teacher Convention, receiving a plaque and certificates.
Pauline was married to George Hlavacek on Dec. 21, 1946, after his return from the Armed Services in Japan. To this union, one son, Dennis Hlavacek, was born on April 3, 1955.
At the age of 19, Pauline was saved and baptized at the Montevallo Baptist Church. She moved her membership to the First Baptist Church in El Dorado Springs when her husband, George, was saved and baptized. She has attended down through the years.
After retiring, she enjoyed making quilts, working jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, traveling with her son and husband, reading, fishing. She enjoyed cooking for her family on birthdays, holidays and any family get-togethers.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, George; son, Dennis; parents, Harvey and Eunice Julian; four brothers, Kenneth Lee Julian, Cecil Julian, Howard Julian, and John Julian; sister-in-laws, Marie Julian, Faye Julian, Alice Julian-Brown, and Linda Julian.
She is survived by her grandson, Michael Hlavacek, and wife, Christy, of Springfield; their three children, Race, Ethan and Madison; daughter-in-law, Dalinda Hlavacek, of El Dorado Springs; sister, Mary, and husband, Jack Lady, of El Dorado Springs; brother, Frank Julian, and wife, of Kansas City. She leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends and many students.
She will be missed by her family and those who knew her.
Visitation was Thursday, Sept. 8, at Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home. Service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the First Baptist Church in El Dorado Springs.
