Robert Edward Herbst, 88. rural El Dorado Springs, passed away April 11, 2023. Robert was born on April 7, 1935, to Fay J. Herbst and Bessie Wheeler in Kansas City. He attended El Dorado Springs High School.

On July 6, 1956, he married Beverly Ann Alexander. Together they had one daughter, Peggy Sue.

Robert, more affectionately known as “Bob” to his friends and family, served in the United States Army from 1958-1960. He was stationed in Germany for 18 months. Upon returning, he lived a simple life, farming and tending livestock with his beloved wife on their farm outside of Tiffin. They milked cows and raised chickens and hogs, along with putting up hay and row crop farming. In 1990, they sold the dairy cows, and he transitioned back to driving trucks, which he found great enjoyment in. Upon his retirement they continued raising cattle for several more years.

Bob was a hard-working, loyal man who loved his family very much. He valued their needs above his own. He loved to fish, hunt quail, and watch westerns and NASCAR. He had a knack for telling some pretty entertaining stories. He was the icon of a shade tree mechanic, always tinkering with motors under a shade tree in the hot summer heat. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality as he never knew a stranger, his bigger than life stories, and bringing humor to all situations. He will be deeply missed by everyone.

Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beverly; daughter, Peggy Oney, and husband, Delbert; two grandchildren, Kara Moyer and husband, Michael and Ryan Oney and wife, Noelle; one special great-granddaughter, Jovi Moyer; two brothers, Fay Herbst Jr. and wife, Doris and Jim Herbst and wife, Lois; sister, Betty Gibson; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Fay and Bessie Herbst; siblings, Patsy Covington and Bill Herbst; and in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Alexander.

A funeral service was held on Friday, April 14, at Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home with Bob Holman and Michael Moyer officiating. Interment followed at El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Delbert Oney, Ryan Oney, Alan Hackleman, Lee Covington, Andy Herbst and Dan Wisner. Honorary pallbearers were Lewis Covington and Larry Covington.
