Cedar County Historical Society news

Prior to our regular monthly meeting of the Cedar County Historical Society Leslie James, Field Archivist for the Missouri State Archives, presented a program on prohibition in Cedar County. The program was well attended and we wish to express our appreciation to Leslie for taking the time to present the program to our group.

Following the program the meeting was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Those present for the meeting were President Judy Nichols, Vice President Judith Cain, Secretary Connie Maupin, Treasurer Shirley Potts, Luella Phipps, Sharyl Henry, Anna Laura Hopkins, Bob Phillips, Judge Joe Phillips, Marcie Haralson and Chris Barber.

Judge Joe Phillips stepped in for brother, Bob, and gave us a five minute story concerning their pioneer family’s experiences when first moving to Cedar County.

Society bylaws revisions were discussed. Glenda Pate will write our newsletter which will be emailed to those members who supply email addresses or mailed to those who do not. Judy Nichols and Chris Barber have sorted through all used ink cartridges that have been donated and now have a package ready to mail for refund.

President Judy Nichols reminded us of the Korth Fall Family Festival Fundraiser and Hog Roast to be held Saturday, Sept. 9, at 504 Shady Lane in Stockton. Information and tickets can be obtained by calling the Korth Center at 417-276-5306.

During the Black Walnut Festival the Society will have a booth at the park in addition to the museum being open on Friday, noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Society will no longer be able to do genealogy searches for the public. Unfortunately, we no longer have the staff to provide that service. The museum sells historically informative books about Cedar County and maintains a research library for those who wish to do their own research.

Donations: Claud Hoffman, “Stories of Nola Hoffman”, and “Hoffman Family History”; Chris Barber, a Red Cross nurses cap, collar and Red Cross patches; Mary Nichols, two gallon milk jug, graniteware and green Mason jars.

Our next meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in the museum at 106 West Davis Street in Stockton. Our meetings are open to the public. The museum and research library are open the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. or you may call to make an appointment.
