Johnnie Lucille (Webb) Hoagland, 85, Schell City, the daughter of John Edward Webb and Mirtie Norene (Sanders) (Webb) Evans was born July 17, 1936, in rural Hatfield, AR and passed from this life at 9:25 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler.

Growing up, Lucille came from humble beginnings. She often recalled working with her uncle to strip bark from pine posts by hand with a draw knife to help provide for her mother’s large family. She attended school in Hatfield, graduating with the Class of 1954.

After graduation, she moved to Kansas City to live with her mother and began employment with Hallmark Cards. In July 1954, she met the love of her life, Johnny Raymond Hoagland on a blind date. They were united in marriage on Jan. 14, 1955, and to their union, three children were born, John Mitchell, Mary Kathleen, and Julie Ann.

John and Lucille moved to his hometown of Schell City in the fall of 1956, to make this area their home after purchasing the filling station in town, their then livelihood. John and Lucille celebrated 66 years of marriage in 2021.

Lucille was a dedicated homemaker and always kept her family and home as her number one priority. She was an excellent seamstress known for her skilled hands when it came to clothing, crafts and her signature “Raggedy Ann” dolls. She was a passionate gardener, always proud to show-off her flowers and garden from which she always canned enough spaghetti sauce and salsa to supply her entire family.

While always an excellent maker of sweets, she was famous in her family for her “RED” cranberry jello and caramel puffed corn, which all of her children and grandchildren lovingly call “Grandma’s Crack” (because of its addictive nature).

If Lucille couldn’t be found sewing, gardening or making sweets, you could find her tuning into or attending the latest sports events. She was a dedicated fan at all levels – local to national – from the Schell City Bears, NEVC Knights, Nevada Tigers, and others, to the Kansas City Chiefs, KC Royals, Kansas Jayhawks and especially the College World Series.

Most of all, Lucille will be remembered for her love of her community, her generosity and her compassion for others. She was a dedicated longtime member of the Schell City Christian Church where she led Vacation Bible School crafts for many years and served as Secretary of her Sunday School class. She was a member of the Modern Mothers Club and was a longtime school board member for Northeast Vernon County R-1 Schools. She was an active participant in Schell City Community Betterment activities, especially the annual Fall Festival.

Lucille is survived by her loving family, including: husband, Johnny, of the home in Schell City; son, John Mitchell Hoagland, and wife, Jeanne – Schell City; daughters, Mary Ambrose, and husband, Greg – Lee’s Summit; and Julie Wilson and husband, Kurt – Nevada; grandchildren, Jesse Beaty, and wife, Leeanne – El Dorado Springs; Jenna Eiland and husband, Tony – Blue Springs; Spencer Tuma and husband, Andrew – Linn; Drue Hoagland and wife, Sydney – Ft.
