American Bass Anglers Division 126 held the first qualifying tournament of the 2013 season on Stockton Lake Oct. 13. The day started warm and breezy with a major front predicted to move in by evening. It was overcast most of the day with air temps reaching 80 ̊ and water temps in the mid 60’s. The main lake had white-caps by 10 a.m. Lightning strikes and rolls of thunder became too close for the writer of this story at about 2 p.m. Everyone was in by 3:30.
Fishing had been reported as very good the last few days, but it turned out a little tougher on this day. Local angler Carl Cox topped the field with a five-fish limit weighing 11.93 lbs. and anchored by big fish of the day, a 4.2 lb. largemouth. Justin Angel of Willard was second with 10.94 lbs. followed by Tennessee angler, Bill Stines with 9.54 lbs. Anglers reported catching fish on jigs and spinnerbaits. It was an all-day bite, just seemed to be a slow bite.
Anglers compete for cash, prizes and points which qualify them to fish a two-day Championship on Stockton in July 2013 and a National Championship on a lake yet to be announced. This was the first D126 tournament for the 2013 season. There will be eight more one-day tournaments and a two-day Championship held on Stockton Lake. The best four one-day tournament points and the two-day points determine year-end point totals for the D126 Angler of the Year award.
The next two D126 tournaments are scheduled for Nov. 3 and Dec. 8, both launching from Old State Park Ramp. The rest of the schedule, which includes January and February tournaments, is posted at www.centralmidwestbass.com and www.americanbassanglers.com.
ABA was designed for the weekend angler and is open to boaters and non-boaters. It is a draw format with partner pairing taking place the morning of each tournament. Anglers from age 14 can enter these tournaments.
