On Monday, May 6, the El Dorado Springs high school track team traveled to Lamar for the Class 2 District 5 track meet. Due to the forecasted weather, this was a change from the original date of Saturday, May 4. Weather has been a big factor all season long. The District track meet was supposed to be our 10th track meet of the year, however, it was just our sixth track meet. So it wasn’t a surprise to see a reschedule. Monday started off cool but ended up nice, and was much better than Saturday’s weather, so the kids were happy for that.
Starting with Districts, the kids have to qualify to move on to the next round, and to qualify, they must place in the top 4 in each event. Those who qualified move on to the Sectional meet, which will be held on Saturday, May 11.
The girls’ team placed 6th out of a field of 16 teams. Those scoring included: Courtney Hooper, 8th in both the Discus and Shot Put; Jaynee Beaty, 7th in the 100 m. Hurdles; Tessa Durnell, 5th in the 1600 m. Run; Jaynee Beaty, 6th and Chelsea Colbert, 8th, in the 300 m. Low Hurdles; and Tessa Durnell, 6th, in the 3200 m. Run.
Those qualifying to move on to Sectionals are: the 4 x 800 m. Relay, consisting of Elizabeth Clark, Tessa Durnell, Rachel Bush and Cameron McPeak, which placed 2nd; Rachel Bush, 2nd, in the 400 m. Dash; Cameron McPeak, 3rd, in the 800 m. Run; Hannah Bruggemann, 2nd, in the 3200 m. Run, with a School Record Breaking time of 12:34 (school record of 12:47 originally shared by Lucinda Fortney and Paula Reynolds); and the 4 x 400 m. Relay, consisting of Kate Sibley, Rachel Bush, Elizabeth Clark and Cameron McPeak, which placed 3rd.
The boys’ team placed 4th out of a field of 16 teams. Those scoring included: Heath Sutton, 7th, in the high jump; Landen Smith, 7th in the long jump; Cody Clark, 6th, in the discus throw; the 4 x 800 m. relay, consisting of Jakob Boleyn, Tyler O’Bannion, Richard Lyness and Tommy Cornejo, which placed 6th; the 4 x 200 m. Relay, consisting of Tanner Hixson, Landen Smith, Derek White and Richard Lyness, which placed 6th; Josh Girven, 8th in the 300 m. Intermediate Hurdles; and Tommy Cornejo, 7th in the 800 m. Run.
Those qualifying to move on to Sectionals are: Tanner Hixson, 2nd in the pole vault; Colten Hedrick, 4th in the shot put; Heath Sutton, 2nd and Lance Molz, 3rd in the 400 m. Dash; Lance Molz, 3rd in the 200 m. Dash; and the 4 x 400 m. Relay, consisting of Landen Smith, Lance Molz, Richard Lyness and Heath Sutton, which placed 3rd.
Overall, we had a pretty good day. We even saw those that just missed scoring, performing with their best performance of the season. We were pleased with the effort for the day.
The Sectional Meet will be held on Saturday, May 11, at Fair Grove. To move on to the next week which is State, athletes must, again, place in the top 4 at Sectionals.
