Posted October 4, 2012 at 9:45 am

Twenty-nine members of TOPS 0319 MO met in the El Dorado Springs Church Of Christ Meeting Room on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Robbie called the meeting to order and Kay led us in singing “Losing.”

We had some good losses. Felicia lost 3 lbs. and Denise lost 2.2. Of those who stayed for the meeting, Robbie was the best loser with a loss of 1.8 lbs. The club had a net loss of .4 lbs.

We sang Happy Birthday to Kay and to Mary Ann.

Marilyn had the program today and spoke on breast cancer awareness. As a teenager, Marilyn was heavy and weighed 220. She lost weight and did fine till about age 50. She said weight has a lot to do with different cancers we get. Marilyn is a 10-year cancer survivor. She said exercise and staying lean are important to decrease cancer risk.

It is thought sitting may increase the risk of cancer. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, avoid high sugar intake and eat a variety of fruits and vegetable, legumes, berries and stone fruit. Melons and tomatoes are good as well. Limit red meat and processed meats. Try to eat fish instead. Fiber is important and limit alcohol, salt and foods processed with salt. Do not smoke or chew and try for 8-9 hours of sleep.

Marilyn said to lose weight one should exercise 50 minutes each day five days a week. She suggests eating same foods regularly and do not splurge on holidays and weekends. Always eat breakfast. She said without TOPS she would not be able to keep her weight off.
