Sidney Joe Lurten, 92, passed away Friday, March 28, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. Sidney was born Feb. 28, 1933. Sidney was the son of James Franklin Lurten and Emma Jane Long Lurten.
Sidney was born at the end of the Great Depression, had 14 siblings, and worked very hard to help his mom, dad and siblings survive. He worked on the farm and did all he could to help his family. Sidney’s mother was a born again Christian and made sure her children were under the sound of the gospel. Sidney fell under conviction as a child and sought the Lord with bitter tears of repentance. Sidney was saved by Jesus Christ by grace through faith at the age of 17 years old in his mother’s kitchen in 1950.
Sidney was called to preach by God shortly thereafter and surrendered his call to preach while in Korea. Sidney was a Korean War veteran and faithfully served in the United States Army. Sidney was a Missionary Baptist Reverend and was ordained in 1969 at Durnell Chapel. Many were saved by God and baptized under his ministry. He performed many marriages and burials. He was an Evangelist, Preacher, Pastor and Teacher. He held countless revivals and loved serving the Lord. He faithfully served God and preached up until his death at 92 years old.
Sidney loved the Lord and served the Lord. He would go out of his way to speak to anyone about God and would want you to know where you stand with God. Make your calling and election sure. Make sure you have the firm foundation. Make sure you have that anchor of the soul that is both sure and steadfast. Sidney preached on the KLBR Bolivar Radio for some years and traveled to many churches to preach the word of God. Sidney loved God, his family and everyone he met.
