Johnnie (John R.) Raymond Hoagland, age 92, of Schell City, MO, the youngest son of three children born to John Miller Hoagland and Marrietta (Cawood) Hoagland was born May 28, 1933 in Kansas City, MO and passed from this life the morning of Friday, February 6, 2026 at Community Springs Healthcare Facility in El Dorado Springs.
From an early age, John endured losses in his family that would shape the trajectory of his life. At the age of six his mother passed away and he and his siblings lived for a time with his Uncle George and Aunt Zepha Hoagland in the Appleton City area, where they attended school. After his father remarried, the children were reunited as a family briefly living in Kansas City before relocating permanently to Schell City. The family lived for a time at the “Brick Hotel,” before settling on their farm down “Old River Road.”
John graduated early from Schell City High School in 1951 in order to enlist in the United States Navy where he served honorably from 1951-1953 in the Korean Conflict. He was incredibly proud to have served his country and recalled memories from his time in the Navy throughout his life. While John was serving at sea, tragedy again struck the family when his brother, Mitchell, was killed in a car accident traveling home from Camp Crowder. Because of his post at sea, he was unable to travel home to attend his brother’s funeral. In his brother’s honor, John began raising the flag at Green Lawn Cemetery’s annual Memorial Day service in 1954 and raised the flag for 70 consecutive years. The 48-star flag covering his casket today is the same flag that covered his brother’s casket in 1953.
Following John’s military service, he returned to Kansas City for a brief time and was employed with American Can Co. It was during his time in Kansas City that he accepted a blind date and met the love of his life, Johnnie Lucille Webb. John and Lucille were married Friday, Jan. 14, 1955, and to their union three children were born, John Mitchell, Mary Kathleen, and Julie Ann. John and Lucille moved to his hometown of Schell City in the fall of 1956 to make this area their home. They celebrated 66 years of marriage in 2021. Notably, John wore a pink button up shirt with charcoal slacks on his first date with Lucille. He requested that he be laid to rest in a similar outfit, so that Lucille would “recognize him” when they were reunited in Heaven.
John purchased a filling station from the Brooks family, renaming it Hoagland Oil Company in 1957 in downtown Schell City, selling fuel, doing light mechanic work, and making countless tire repairs. In the 1960s, he sold the station to longtime friend and employee Jr. Harms and John began employment with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier based out of the Schell City Post Office. He retired in 1989.
Following his retirement, John and Lucille enjoyed treks through South Dakota, particularly Deadwood, and long road trips to Laughlin, NV. John was a longtime member of the Schell City Christian Church. He also served as alderman in Schell City, was a member of the Schell City Rural Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Missouri Rural Carriers Association. For a time, he worked with the Area Agency on Aging as an Ombudsman.
John is survived by his loving family, including his son, John, and wife, Jeanne, of Schell City; daughters, Mary Ambrose, and husband, Greg, of Lee’s Summit; and Julie Wilson and husband, Kurt, of Nevada; grandchildren, Jesse Beaty, and wife, Leeanne, of El Dorado Springs, Jenna Eiland and husband, Tony, of Blue Springs, Spencer Tuma and husband, Andrew, of Linn, Drue Hoagland and wife, Sydney, of Aberdeen, NC, Grant Wilson and fiancee, Blaire Frank, of Holts Summit and Blair Niegsch and husband, Storm, of Pittsburg, KS; great-grandchildren: Austin Ruesink and wife, Sara, Gauge and Cason Eiland, Beau and Hank Tuma, William Hoagland and Kennedy and Hadley Frank.
