As Governor Mike Parson approaches the end of his term, one of his final acts has been to appoint Carla Lowe of Stockton as the new Cedar County Treasurer. This decision follows the resignation of long-serving Treasurer Peggy Kenney, whose retirement marks the end of an 18-year chapter of dedicated public service to Cedar County.
Honoring Peggy Kenney’s Legacy
Kenney’s career in Cedar County government began as County Clerk and later transitioned to Treasurer, a role she filled with unwavering commitment and a deep love for her community. Her contributions have shaped the county’s development and provided a steady hand in financial stewardship.
Although she’s stepping away from her treasurer duties, Kenney’s passion for service continues. She’s now running for the Cedar County Hospital Board, hoping to further contribute to the community’s well-being. Her lasting impact serves as both an inspiration and a benchmark for those who follow in her footsteps.
Cedar County’s New Treasurer
Carla Lowe, a familiar face in Cedar County, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. As the office manager for the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, Lowe has honed her skills in administration, organization, and financial management. Her professional background also includes co-owning Thornton Natural Healthcare, where she worked as a massage therapist and earned an Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification.
Lowe’s appointment follows an in-depth selection process, which includes interviews with other qualified candidates, such as Ashley Shaw and Brandy Anderson before the decision ultimately rests with Governor Parson. Despite Anderson receiving the most votes from the Cedar County Central Committee, the Governor determined Lowe was best suited for the position, citing her diverse experience and dedication to public service.
“I’m so thankful the Governor has given me a vote of confidence by appointing me as Treasurer for Cedar County,” Lowe said. “I hope to earn the community’s trust and be elected at the end of my two-year term.”
Charting a path forward as she takes office, Lowe has outlined clear goals and strategies to guide her tenure.
Collaboration and Learning: Lowe plans to work closely with Cedar County’s elected officials and department leaders, ensuring she understands the nuances of her new role. “My immediate goal is to learn as much as possible from our former Treasurer, Peggy Kenney,” she shared.
Financial Stewardship: With years of experience managing taxpayer funds at the Sheriff’s Office, Lowe aims to bring the same level of diligence and care to the Treasurer’s office. “The County Commission sets the budget, and as Treasurer, I will be the steward of the accounts by receiving and distributing the county’s funds to the proper recipients.”
Transparency and Community Engagement: Lowe emphasizes the importance of transparency, noting that the Treasurer’s office records are public and readily accessible. “It’s the taxpayers’ money, and I’m committed to making sure it’s managed responsibly and openly.”
A promising start, Cedar County’s financial health remains solid, and Lowe’s proactive approach aims to keep it that way. While no immediate challenges are anticipated, she’s prepared to collaborate with county officials to address any potential issues.
As she begins this new chapter, Lowe expresses gratitude for the opportunity and a determination to serve her community with integrity and care. As I conclude this article, I invite everyone in the Cedar County community to extend their heartfelt wishes to Peggy Kenney for a joyful retirement and congratulations to Carla Lowe on her new role. May both of you find happiness and fulfillment in these exciting new chapters of your lives.
