Each year the Elizabeth Carey Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution offers an essay contest for grades 5-8 and another for grades 9-12. This year’s contest topic for grades 9-12 is to select a person from the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783) and discuss how he or she influenced the course of the American Revolution, including who he or she was and the contribution that this historic character made to the founding of a new nation. The contest topic for grades 5-8 is correlated with the celebration of America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. The topic title is “Lunch with a Signer” Question: American will celebrate her 250th birthday on July 4, 2026! If you could go back in time and meet one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence for lunch, who would you choose? How did their actions and service contribute to our Country becoming independent?
This contest is open to any students in the Vernon, Cedar and Barton County schools plus any home-schooled students. Winners are selected from each grade level 5-8 and 1 winner from grades 9-12. Monetary prizes are awarded at an Awards Reception in February.
