Our group met on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the garden site where we planted a number of perennials brought from our own gardens. These plants were placed in the two tilled beds on the south edge of the garden site.

The rain moved in just as we were finishing so we didn’t even need to water the plants and we delayed the business portion of our meeting to next week, when we will meet at the garden site. If it rains, our meeting will be at 122 Hightower.

Bruce Rogers, City Manager, stopped by as we were doing our planting and he got to meet several of the group. We invited him to attend our meeting next week and/or whenever he could.

The City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at which time they will review our request for an extension of the land use agreement to 2021. We believe we need that extra time in order to really get our ducks in a row, rather our raised beds in a row, at the garden. Christin and Sharon will attend that meeting.

We are asking for bagged leaves again this fall and that they be left on the north side of the site, along the edge of the alleyway. We are asking everyone to begin saving their newspapers and we will have a special day when we will ask that they be brought to the garden site. Newspapers make excellent mulch and we need all we can get.

We are asking for volunteers. While we don’t yet have any specific chores or duties for volunteers, we decided to begin taking names and phone numbers. If you would like to be a part of the volunteer effort later on this fall and next spring, too, please call 417/321-0216 and leave your name and phone number. Someone will get back to you. We want to get you registered and have a liability waiver signed so we can put you to work.

We still don’t have a definitive answer about funding so please keep us in mind when that “donating bug” bites.

Until next week. Oh, thanks to those who called to volunteer this past week. We thank you.
