Papinville was buzzing with fun and good times on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Approximately 150 persons from 20 different towns in Missouri and Kansas were present for a good old fashioned country get together.

The day begin with two historical tours given by Phyllis Stewart on the history of the Drainage Ditch. Those on the tour were transported by wagons pulled by tractor or mules. We once again thank Don Pippin and friends of Butler for coming and giving everyone an enjoyable time with the wagon rides. All enjoyed hearing all the facts that Phyllis shared with them.

Wonderful music by the Heartfelt Band led by Wesley and Sharon Danner joined by four other family members and friends. We are truly grateful to this group for sharing their music with us every year.

During the afternoon the activities enjoyed by the crowd were: cake walk, duck pond, pie contest, silent auction and coloring contest for the kids.

The pie contest was Judged at 3 p.m. and the winners were as follows; Fruit, 1st and 2nd Angela Stangle 3rd Phyllis Stewart, Honorable mention to Hannah Arnold. Other 1st Rita McGuire, 2nd Pam Wingate, 3rd Ron Derr. Junior winners were; 1st Montana Stangel, 2nd Cheyenne Wilson, 3rd Madison Wilson. We appreciate all the participants and a special thanks to our judges for a job well done.

One of the highlights of the day was the honoring of Elsie Klinksick who turned 100 years young this year. We made her our Papinville Queen complete with banner, cape and crown.

Larry Hacker conducted our live auction helped by Bob Swarnes. The bidding was lively and generous and we are most grateful to all who participated.

A special thanks to Jim Wheatley’s family for the donating one of his woodworking pieces that he made. Also to Della Glaze’s family for the donation of a lamp. It is because of all who donate and all who bid and buy that this remains a very important part of our event.

Everyone stood and gave the pledge to the American Flag and then Wesley Danner had prayer for the meal. All then lined up for a delicious meal prepared by the faithful and hardworking association’s members and their families and all who donated desserts. You put it all together and you have a great meal enjoyed by all.

At 6 p.m. the silent auction closed and the quilt drawing was held. Judy Fullerton who machine quilted the quilt drew the winning name. Carol Bartlett from rural Rich Hill was the lucky winner and Beverly Sullins had the honor of presenting the quilt to her on Monday afternoon.

We want to thank the following businesses and people for their donations; Rich Hill Security Bank, 49 Floral-Jara Mumma, Bud and Nancy Fillpot, Pecans and More, Rich Hill Food Fair, Ash Grove Aggregates, Flaming Lantern, Gray”s Cafe, Butler Heiman Agri-Service, Rich Hill Café, West Central Agri-Service, Stoplight, Suzanne Noe, South Side Cuts, Heuser Hardware, Rozella Caldwell, Dorcas Brown, Barrett and Meghann Case, Phyllis Wheatley, Gina Breckenridge, Pete and Marion Eikenbary, and all area radio stations and newspapers. To all who donated pies, cakes and other desserts, and to each of our officers, members and their families. This event would never be a reality without the help of each and every one of you.

Soon the buzz of activity began to slow and the hum of mosquitoes began to drone. As people were leaving we heard comments such as “great day, good food, loved the music,” and what we wanted to hear most “see you next year.” So thanks to everyone our 25th Annual Papinville Picnic is now officially over but remember the 4th Saturday of September, 2017 we will do it again. There is already talk of something different in store. Thanks again to everyone and we will indeed see you next year.
