IRIS BELLES START NEW YEAR – The Iris Belles Garden Club met in the home of member Susie Janes on Friday, Jan. 20. This group of ladies enjoys getting together to share their love of gardening, plants and life. The first garden clubs started in the late 1800’s and the clubs across the nation have gone through many changes. Gone are the days of sophisticated, formal meetings complete with white gloves and hats. Time changes most things. The relaxed informal gathering is a welcome change. The meeting structure is always the same but the individual sharing is what makes each meeting unique. The yearbook committee (composed of Melody and Jim Wilson) contributes time and skill to prepare a beautiful printed book each year for Iris Belles that serves as the club’s meeting guide for the year. There’s the business portion of the meeting where reports are given and potential changes discussed. In lieu of experts to make presentations, Iris Belles asks members to sign up or they are selected to research a program topic and then share that in the program portion of the meeting. At the January meeting Vicki Golubski presented an informative and timely program called, “Earthquake Drill”.

Members pictured are (from left): Judy Friar, Susie Janes, Dorothy Foster, Arda Fae Bruce, Mary McLeod, Virginia Sprouse, Kathi Whitlock, Sheryl Walker, Beverly Janes and Vicki Golubski. Looking forward to a new year of fun in the garden even as we wait for the course of nature to allow outdoor activity to commence.
