By Judy Nichols
The society met at the Cedar County Museum in Stockton, on October 27, 2025, for their monthly meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Members in attendance were: President Judy Nichols, Vice President Chris Barber, Secretary Connie Maupin, Judith Cain, Virginia Barber, Anna Hopkins, Frank Stranimier, Bob Phillips and Ellis Benham.
The October quarterly newsletter has been published and sent to members.
The security lights on the west side of the building in the alley have been repaired by Jeff Barber. It was great to have that area lighted during the Walnut Festival.
The society is still waiting on an action plan and blueprints (drawing) from the American Legion for their new Legion Hall, a half-acre veterans’ garden, skeet- shooting range and a pistol range. They are requesting some old jail stones to use for the project.
Judy Nichols gave a re-cap of the events and income from the Black Walnut Festival. Chris and Virginia Barber commented on their participation and events at the booth in the park.
The CCHS logo T-shirts arrived and were dispersed to members who ordered one. A few are still available for purchase by members only.
The society purchased a color version of the 1888 Missouri Railway map. It will be archived in the research library at the museum.
A new 4-H Club has been established in Stockton. The Stockton Seekers 4-H Club leader, Rosey King, stated that they will meet on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church, in Stockton. Children, ages five through eighteen may join the club.
Judy Nichols was contacted by a Cedar County commissioner about a request that they received from a member of a group,“This Week in Missouri Politics,” about an interview for them and possibly the society. Judy made contact with the company to find-out what they really needed. It was found that they interview elected officials and discuss local political news, perspectives and strategies to be aired on their podcast and television show. Judy will let them know that the society is not interested in nor can they become involved in politics due to the by-laws of the society and non-profit status. A 501(c)(3) historical society in Missouri cannot get involved in partisan politics, as this is strictly prohibited by federal law.
The Wayside Inn ~ Preserve Our Past Society, would like to post their events on the CCHS Facebook online page. Judy Nichols will contact them about it. CCHS has posted some of Wayside Inn events in the past, but there seems to be a communication issue with posting on each others page which can be corrected.
Museum publication inventory will need to be done this winter. Frank Stranimier volunteered to help.
The museum will be converting to “Winter Hours” on Nov. 1. The museum will only be open on the last Monday of the month, from 1 to 4 p.m., which is also the date for regular monthly meetings. The museum is always closed in December. Those hours will continue until April, when the museum will be open more often. Special appointments can be made to visit the museum or research library. The next meeting will be on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. at the museum
