Members of the Cedar County Historical Society gathered at the museum in Stockton, on Monday, Feb. 24, for a soup lunch, with good food and fellowship. Following lunch the business meeting was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Members present were President Judy Nichols, Vice President Chris Barber, Secretary Connie Maupin, Treasurer Anna Hopkins, Judith Cain, Sheila Griggs, Virginia Barber, Frank Stranimier, Sharyl Henry, Ellis Benham and Bob Estes.

Chris and Virginia Barber reported working on a program and have since solidified plans. Local author and Missouri native, Kaitlyn McConnell, will present the program,“Ozarks Superstitions, Traditions and Legends” on June 8, at 6 p.m., at the museum. The program is free to the public.

An awning that will go up over the front door is due to be installed by April. This addition will not only enhance the entryway, but will provide much needed protection from the weather for the new front doors. The security lighting will need to be relocated.

Two new chairs, a table, grid-walls for displaying photos, etc. have arrived, although there were some problems with other grid-walls arriving damaged. Judy Nichols will be investigating other options for purchasing more.

The little Niche store has been closed, which provides some much needed display space for the museum. There will still be a white elephant sale at the museum during Walnut Festival.

Judy Nichols requested some assistance from members to identify homes and people in some old photos. Members were happy to oblige.

Frank Stranimier donated some much needed ceiling tiles to replace damaged tiles in the research library. Bob Phillips donated a military helmet liner.

The museum will resume regular open days beginning April 19, weather permitting. Open dates will be the first and third Saturday of the month from noon to 4 p.m. Meetings will be held on the last Monday of each month at 1 p.m. and the museum will also be open during those hours. The next meeting will be on Monday, March 31, at 1 p.m.

The society’s historical books, maps, CDs and member books make great gifts for those who like Cedar County history and are available for sale at the museum.
