Laurie Bybee, Recipient of the 2022-2023 Region 11 Distinguished Service Award

Laurie Bybee has been teaching family and consumer science along with courses in business for 27 years, 21 of which have been at the Northeast Vernon County R-1 School District High School at Walker. She and husband Delbert have been married for 35 years and together have one daughter, Bailee, a nurse – whose husband, Dalton – is part of the Vernon County Road and Bridge crew.

At her school, Bybee is faculty sponsor for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) as well as the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapters. While proud of all of her students, she has been delighted to see a number of them garner top awards at the state and national levels in both FCCLA and FBLA, even in the same year. In addition, her students have served as regional officers and for the past and current school years, have held state offices in FCCLA.

From 2005-2007, Bybee served on the Missouri Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences (MoEFACS) board and was awarded the Distinguished Instructor Award in 2019. She has counted it a privilege to have guided a number of fellow instructors as part of Missouri’s Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Instructor Mentoring Program.

In addition to these efforts, Bybee has served at her high school as faculty sponsor for National Honor Society and various grade classes.

Bybee earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Computer Science from Southwest Baptist University and a Masters in Secondary Education from Southwest Missouri State University. She earned her teaching certification through Missouri Southern State University.

Bybee’s love of all things FCCLA is not just her occupation but also her avocation as she fills spare time with cooking, reading, sewing and being with her family.
