As deer hunters across the region prepare for one of Missouri’s most anticipated outdoor traditions, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to keep safety at the forefront.
In a message shared on social media this week, Sheriff Jason Buehler wished everyone “good luck and a safe deer hunting season,” while also outlining several key precautions for firearm safety, communication, and tree-stand use.
According to the sheriff’s office, hunters should begin with the basics of firearm safety. Officials stress the importance of treating every firearm as if it is loaded, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and ensuring your finger stays off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Hunters are also reminded to clearly identify both their target and what lies beyond it before firing.
Sheriff Buehler also encouraged hunters to share their plans with someone at home, including their exact hunting location and expected return time. Wearing hunter orange remains a crucial safety measure, as does inspecting firearms and gear for any damage before heading into the woods.
Tree-stand safety was also a significant focus of the message. The sheriff’s office recommends always wearing a full-body fall-arrest harness when climbing into, sitting in, or climbing down from a stand. Hunters are reminded never to climb with a loaded firearm and to practice using their stand at ground level before the season begins.
Other general safety tips include staying calm in the event of a fall, avoiding shooting at movement or sounds in heavy brush, and dressing appropriately for cold temperatures. The sheriff’s office suggests carrying water, preparing for changing weather conditions, and using hand warmers when needed.
“As always,” the post noted, “safety should be the first priority.”
Deer season remains a cherished time for many families across Vernon County and the surrounding rural communities. Sheriff Buehler and his department hope these reminders help ensure a safe and successful season for all.
