It’s often said that laughter is the best medicine. But comedian and best-selling author Larry Wilde took this statement to heart when he founded National Humor Month in 1976 as a way to heighten public awareness of the therapeutic value of humor. And the scientific community is now beginning to acknowledge that laughter and joy can lead to improved well-being, better communication skills, elevated morale and a richer quality of life.

Here are just some of the benefits of laughter and fun ways to celebrate the month of merriment:

Healthy hilarity

It’s no secret that a good laugh lifts your spirits. But the actual curative power of humor is now supported by medical research. According to MayoClinic.org, laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, which stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles and increases the amount of stress-relieving endorphins released by your brain. Over time, this continued release of tension through positive thoughts and a humorous outlook can help improve your immune system and curb anxiety and depression.

Jovial journals

With negative news coming at us on a daily basis from multiple media outlets, it’s all the more important to make sure to focus on the laughter in our daily lives. A journal is a great way to collect and appreciate all the humorous moments that happen at home or out in the world. Encourage your kids to create their own “laugh logs” by writing down – or drawing pictures of – any happenings at school or things people said that gave them a chuckle in a colorful notebook.

Comedic cinema

Just about everyone has a favorite funny movie (and the ability to quote from it practically on demand). So, why not host your own comedy film festival at home? Fire up the big screen in your living room or – if you’ve got some beautiful evening weather – set up a movie screen in your backyard for cinema under the stars. Not sure which flicks to pick? The American Film Institute’s website (AFI.com) offers a listing of “The 100 Funniest Movies of All Time.”

Funny furry friends

Anyone with a pet knows that our animal friends are a near-constant source of love and comedic behavior. Take photos and video of your pets doing the things that bring a smile to your face and keep them handy on your phone or tablet for when you need a lift.
