What’s Going On in Washington— We are now more than three weeks into the Schumer Shutdown. Senate Democrats have voted a dozen times to keep the government closed. They’ve chosen politics over people, partisanship over progress, and chaos over common sense.
More than 500,000 civilian federal employees will miss a full paycheck this week. Thousands of small business loans are frozen — nearly $4 billion in capital that could be helping entrepreneurs grow and hire workers, is instead trapped by the Left’s inability to put America first.
At airports across the country, the consequences are mounting. In one day alone, the FAA had to issue ground stops in Houston, disrupting flights for families and travelers. Thirteen thousand air traffic controllers are still on the job, keeping our skies safe but they’re doing it without pay. According to the White House, some are reportedly taking second jobs just to get by.
The pain doesn’t stop there. Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — SNAP — is beginning to run out in some states, including Missouri. That means more than 40 million low-income Americans could lose access to food benefits next week if Democrats continue to hold them hostage. Families in Missouri and all over America are worried about their next meal…while Washington Democrats treat their suffering like a bargaining chip.
Why are they doing this? To protect taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants, some with violent criminal records. Under the Biden Administration, illegal aliens were allowed to enter with minimal screening, apply for work permits, receive Social Security numbers, and access Medicaid. President Trump and House Republicans put an end to that fraud through one big, beautiful bill. But Democrats have shut down the government to try to undo that progress.
Even their own words reveal the truth. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer bragged that “every day gets better” as the shutdown continues. The number two ranking House Democrat admitted, “Families will suffer… but this is one of the few leverage points we have.” That’s not leadership — that’s cruelty.
Here in Missouri, we know what real work looks like. People in Warrensburg, Sedalia, Harrisonville, and all across our district show up every day. In our rural hospitals, schools, farms, and small businesses to keep this country running. Washington should do the same.
It’s time for Democrats to end this madness, pass a clean funding bill, and reopen the government. America is suffering. Let’s put the American people first, Chuck Schumer.
