UP IN SMOKE – Shortly after noon on Tuesday, Sept 27, the power station behind the Police Department started belching black smoke as deep orange flames leaped 50 ft into the air. City Manager Bruce Rogers said the blaze was hot enough to melt copper ()

Rogers also said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time but Code Enforcement Office Jennipher Buller heard a noise while she was at the police station and going outside saw an electrical arc between the regulator and the transformer.

Rogers said the sub-station is insured but it will be months before it is back on line. “We’re probably looking at next summer,” he said. He also said all the city power is now supplied by the sub-station in the west part of town. He said that substation was built to carry the load of the whole town in the event something like this happened. The power was back on in three hours.

Rogers wants to thank the Walker, Stockton and Nevada Fire Departments that came to help, KAMO that cut the power feed to the sub-station and the highway patrol and the Cedar  County Sheriff’s office for directing traffic.
