“Providing education to cattle producers in the areas of cattle grading, feeding and marketing helps them make management decisions to add value to their cattle operation,” says Patrick Davis MU Extension Livestock Field Specialist. Understanding calf feedlot performance and carcass characteristics helps build a reputation that leads to marketing your calves postweaning at a premium. Therefore, MU Extension is partnering with the Show Me Youth Ag Academy, Missouri State University, and ACRISURE®-Gibson Insurance to hold a Feeder Cattle Grading, Feeding and Marketing Workshop on December 9th at 6 p.m. at the Lamar First Baptist Church FLOC Building at 1301 East 6th Street, Lamar, MO 64759.

“A portion of this program will focus on various aspects of the steers enrolled in the MO Steer Feedout Program,” says Davis. The Missouri Steer Feedout program on November 17th enrolled steers from 6 farms with the goal of giving youth and steer owners hands on experience in feeding, management and marketing feedlot cattle. Furthermore, this program provides feeding and carcass data to steer owners to improve their operation and help in marketing their cattle. Lonnie Peetz, USDA market reporter, will discuss grading and pricing of the program steers. In addition, Jim Schultz, Field Representative with Joplin Regional Stockyards and Eric Bailey MU Extension State Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist will discuss buying, feeding, management and marketing of each group of steers.

“Risk protection is a very important tool to help in protecting profitability when feeding cattle,” says Davis. Therefore, Chris Lynch with ACRISURE®-Gibson Insurance will discuss risk protection in feeding cattle.

“This event is free, and meal will be provided with support from ACRISURE®-Gibson Insurance,” says Davis. Registration is required to attend by December 1st.
