Learning how to grow edible mushrooms is the focus of an upcoming University of Missouri Extension hands-on workshop in Alton.

The Oregon County MU Extension Council is hosting the “Growing Edible Mushrooms” workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 30, in the Alton Elementary School Multi-purpose building in Alton.

This hands-on workshop is designed for gardeners, market growers, and woodland owners who would like to grow shiitake, oyster and winecap/Stropharia mushrooms.

“Come learn the principles and techniques to cultivate these delicious, healthy mushrooms as a home hobby or small fresh-market business. Each participant will take home an inoculated log, as well as the knowledge needed to begin this rewarding hobby,” said Jamie Gundel, agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

The cost of the workshop is $20 per person and includes a light lunch.

Space is limited, and pre-registration is required to assure there are enough logs and food for everyone attending this workshop.

“We are asking participants to bring a drill to the workshop. If the drill is cordless, please bring an extra battery,” said Gundel.
