Care Connection for Aging Services is still accepting enrollment for its popular “A Matter of Balance” course that will begin online Friday, May 6.
A Matter of Balance is specifically designed to reduce the fear of falling and improve activity levels among older adults. The program includes eight two-hour classes presented to a small group led by trained coaches. The next course will be at 10 a.m. on Fridays. Care Connection is presenting these sessions in cooperation with the University of Missouri Extension.
Participants learn about the importance of exercise in preventing falls and practice exercises to improve strength, coordination, and balance; they also conduct a home safety evaluation and learn to get up and down safely.
Additional topics include assertiveness, developing positive strategies for change, reducing barriers to exercise, identifying physical risk factors for falls, personal action planning, recognizing misconceptions about falls, and moving from self-defeating to self-motivating thoughts. The curriculum includes group discussions, mutual problem-solving, role-playing activities, and a few homework assignments.
If you want to join this class but need help with Zoom, Care Connection can provide one-on-one assistance so that you are comfortable with the online format. The course also may be available via a large-screen TV set up at a local senior center. To find out about that availability, please contact your senior center. To learn more about the course, call 1-800-748-7826. To register (which is required) and receive a Zoom link, visit www.goaging.org/events.
