Free program at Springfield Nature Center offers tips for hooking this popular fish.

In Missouri, crappie fishing is an activity that’s as near and dear to many anglers as any other outdoors pastime. Angler surveys show crappie are among the most fished-for sportfish in the state.

People can learn more about how to hook this popular fish at the free Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) program “Crappie Fishing For Beginners” on March 12 from 6-8 p.m. at MDC’s Springfield Conservation Nature Center, 4601 S. Nature Center Way.

MDC Fisheries Biologist Shane Bush and Naturalist Alan Reed will discuss crappie characteristics, lure options and fishing techniques for different seasons of the year. The program is for ages 10-adult. People can register online at mdc.mo.gov/SouthwestEvents or call 417-888-4237 to get more information.
