Donald L. Fugate, 90, El Dorado Springs, passed away May 20, 2023. Don had been dealing with medical issues coupled with a few injuries.
Don was born July 27, 1932, in El Dorado Springs to Leland and Dora (Worthington) Fugate. He graduated from El Dorado Springs High School and headed to the United States Army in 1952, serving during the Korean War. Don received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Korean Service Medal and many other commendations while in the Army. He was proud of his service and continued it through the Army Reserves and the National Guard. Don achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major prior to his retirement. He was a true patriot and loved his country.
Don became a father to four children: Tony Fugate, Allen, Texas; Cheryl Barrios, The Villages, FL; Debbie Degenfelder, Kansas City; and Cynthia Barrow, Slidell, LA. He and his children spent many fun years taking road trips, visiting Fairyland Park at Proctor and Gamble annual picnics and building a small resort at The Lake of the Ozarks, where he taught them how to ski, boat, fish and build docks, beaches and patios.
Don lived in Kansas City for many years and then returned to El Dorado Springs where he began the farm life that he loved. On Feb. 20, 1973, he married Betty S. Wood. Cody Hudson (Emily) and Cheyenne Shipp (Mike) later became a part of his life. Don and Betty lived in the home he built until her death Feb. 15, 2022.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
He is survived by his children; brother, Floyd (Mary); and sisters: Joan Beydler, Kathleen Jenkins and Maxine Scott; stepsons, Terry Anderson and Randy Hudson; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services for Don Fugate were held Tuesday, May 23, Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Interment followed at the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jason Fugate, Jarrod Fugate, Eric Degenfelder, Terry Fugate, Cody Hudson and Mike Shipp.
