Doris LaVerne (Masten) Weatherly McNarie, 90, Nevada, passed away from this life on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025.
Doris was born to parents, Arthur and Louisa Mae Masten, on March 18, 1934, the youngest of their 11 children. Doris told her children and grandchildren stories about her happy childhood, including riding a horse to school and seeing her brothers go off to war.
Doris married Leo Amos Weatherly, on Sept. 24, 1952, and to this union, three children were born, David, Cheryl and Dana. They raised their family in Nevada. A devoted mother and grandmother, Doris treasured time spent with each of her eight grandchildren and their spouses, her fourteen great-great grandchildren and her three great-great-great grandchildren, plus one she had yet to meet.
She attended school at Roscoe, MO, and graduated high school at Appleton City, MO. She also attended Central Missouri State University and began her career teaching in a one-room school.
A bookkeeper by trade, Doris worked at several local businesses, but retired from Moore-Few Care Center. Since that time, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her passions were photography, quilting, painting, gardening, fishing and singing in the choir. Her love for words led her to write and publish two books and write many poems. Always thrilled with a bargain, Doris was known to buy old cars found in old barns, bring them home to clean up, and restore them back to life.
Doris loved to travel. She cruised on the Mediterranean, toured Italy and fished in the wilds of Canada. She also cruised around the southern tip of South America, visiting various countries on its eastern and western coasts, and sailing through the Panama Canal on her return trip. But her most momentous trip was to the Holy Land, a profound and spiritual experience for her.
Another memorable experience was her reign as Bushwhacker Queen in 1974. She helped with Bushwhacker planning and royalty teas for many years after.
Doris was a child of God. She loved the Lord and was a devoted Christian. She was a beloved Sunday School teacher, worked in countless Bible Schools, sang in the choirs, and worked on many church committees. Her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 118:24.
In her senior years, Doris met Robert McNarie of Kansas City. Their friendship blossomed and they married in May of 2015. Together they enjoyed traveling, fishing and driving through their neighborhood in their golf cart. Robert passed away in October of 2021.
Doris had a soft spot for animals, especially her fur-baby, Star, who never left her side.
Doris will be remembered for her classy sense of fashion. She loved clothes, shoes and jewelry. But mostly, she will be remembered for her kindness and helpfulness. She was a problem solver. Many benefited from her guidance and generous support. She always saw the good in people and the beauty in all things.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Leo A. Weatherly; parents; seven brothers and three sisters. Cherished mother and grandmother, she will be remembered and missed by her children, David and LuAnn Weatherly, Cheryl and Dan Mutch, Dana and Wes Hart, her grandchildren, Mary (Rhett) Elliott, Jim (Jordan) Weatherly, Chris (Molly) Lewis, Nate (Whitney) Lewis, Megan (Charles) Lewis-Gaskin, Andrew (Jessica) Weatherly, Mark (Shawna) Weatherly, Matt (Sarah) Files, many great and great-great grands and many nieces and nephews.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park.
