Message from the Chief Deputy

Winter Preparedness: Staying Safe When Snowed In

With winter weather upon us, it’s essential to be prepared for potential snowstorms and icy conditions. Heavy snowfall and ice can cause power outages, block roads, and make travel hazardous. Taking a few precautions now can help keep you and your family safe.

Essential Supplies to Have on Hand

• Food & Water – Stock up on non-perishable food and enough drinking water for at least three days.

• Medications & First Aid – Ensure you have necessary medications and a well-stocked first aid kit.

• Warm Clothing & Blankets – Have extra layers and blankets available in case of power loss.

• Flashlights & Batteries – Keep flashlights, candles, or battery-powered lanterns ready for light during outages.

• Alternative Heat Sources – If using a generator or fireplace, ensure proper ventilation. Never use outdoor grills or gas stoves inside for heat.

Staying Safe Indoors

•Conserve Heat – Close off unused rooms, block drafts, and use heavy curtains to retain warmth.

• Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Never run a generator indoors or leave a vehicle running in an enclosed space. Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are functioning.

• Stay Informed – Keep a battery-powered radio or weather app handy for updates on conditions and emergencies.

What to Do If You Must Go Outside

• Dress Warmly – Wear layers, waterproof boots, gloves, and a hat to prevent frostbite.

• Shovel Safely – Take breaks and avoid overexertion when clearing snow. Heart attacks are a common risk during extreme cold.

• Watch for Ice – Walk carefully on icy surfaces to prevent falls and injuries.

Check on Others

• Reach out to elderly neighbors, individuals with medical conditions, and others who may need assistance. A simple check-in can make a big difference in extreme weather conditions.

Winter can be unpredictable, but being prepared helps us all stay safe. If you have an emergency, don’t hesitate to call for help.

Stay safe,

Clay Jeffries
