Happy! Excited! Thankful! Faces of 3rd through 6th graders at ECS speak “volumes.” Their language teacher, Mrs. Janet Swank applied for an El Dorado Springs Community Grant in the fall of 2021, requesting to purchase high-interest, non-fiction books for her “Language Arts” classroom. To her surprise, Mrs. Swank’s request of $500 was granted in the spring of 2022! With this wonderful grant, she was able to purchase 140 titles, mostly award-winning “Who Was/What Was?” book series for grades 3-6.
“My student’s have enjoyed these books so much… many reading multiple titles per week! Even reluctant readers have become regular readers since we received these great titles! It is exciting to see the students recommending to their friends a favorite title they have read. I often hear from parents who are thrilled that their child has become so interested in reading theses excellent books.” Mrs. Swank, who has taught language at El Dorado Christian School for five years, has an amazing and extensive teaching background totaling over 34 years! She shared that the books purchased by the grant have, “…not only encouraged a love for reading, the historical, biographical and geographical content of these selections supplement the elementary school’s history curriculum, model good citizenship and promote outstanding character!”
While visiting with Mrs. Swank about the grant, she was sitting on the floor rearranging the books on her bookshelves; she stated that, “…I am so thankful to the people behind the El Dorado Springs Community Grant for the generous award that will be enjoyed by many ECS students for years to come.” Pictured; far left, back row: El Dorado Christian School Principal, Mrs. Kelly Bryson; 4th through 6th grade students and far right-back row, ECS Language teacher, Mrs. Janet Swank.
