On Thursday, Jan. 19, the EHS Scholar Bowl team attended the Marion C. Early History Bowl competition.
The competition itself included 13 rounds, comprising of 10 questions on a variety of historical time periods and subjects.
EHS’s dream team consisted of seniors Ryan Griffin, Jake Cooper, Dusten Evans, Ethan Koca, Sam Priesendorf, and Connor Goatly, as well as sophomore Lily Copenhaver. They would be competing with 47 other Junior High and High School teams thus having their work cut out for them in this competition.
“This year’s competition was very intense. At one point, there were four teams tied for first place. We knew we were 2 points ahead going into Round 12, but there were several outstanding teams right behind us. They do not post the scores for the last two rounds in order to increase the excitement,” said Scholar Bowl Coach Darrin Griffin.
Though their adversaries were strong and their subjects wide-ranging, our bulldogs put in the work and came out on top. The team finished the day with 111 points and earned a nice trophy to bring home with them.
Being so close to this win the last two years, Coach Griffin was extremely proud of his students and all of their wonderful work. He said, “I am so proud of our History Bowl team! We have come close to getting a trophy the last two times we competed, but we always fell a little short. We were all really nervous when they announced the top 10. Once they announced the 2nd place team and it wasn’t us, we breathed a big sigh of relief. Six of our seven team members were seniors, so I am really glad to see them go out on a high note. It is wonderful to see all their knowledge and hard work paying off.”
